For nearly two decades, Reverend Father Benjamin Achi has dedicated his life to the Catholic Church, leaving an indelible mark far beyond his years of service.
Previously the Director of Communication for the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Father Achi now juggles dual roles as the Director of Communications at Godfrey Okoye University and Station Manager of GOUNI Radio.
A masterful communicator, Father Achi has earned widespread admiration for his eloquence, both in his spiritual duties and his humanistic engagements.
On Saturday, June 7, 2025, he took on a deeply personal responsibility—officiating the funeral rites for the legendary Highlife maestro, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, in Imezi Owa, Enugu State. A devoted admirer of Ejeagha’s music, Father Achi shared a father-son bond with the late icon.
He recounted the poignant requiem mass, held within 24 hours of Ejeagha’s passing, fulfilling the musician’s final wish for a quiet, dignified farewell.
His words: “The ceremony was profoundly solemn. With little notice, only close family and a few friends gathered to honor his request for simplicity—no grand displays, just heartfelt reverence.
“It unfolded exactly as he envisioned. He was a man of quiet grace, averse to extravagance. Many were taken aback by the swift, intimate service, but we honored his wishes without compromise.
“This was one of the most emotionally charged ceremonies I’ve presided over in my 18 years as a priest. Our bond ran deep—I saw him multiple times weekly. As I led the mass, waves of emotion swept over me. Every prayer, every hymn carried the weight of our friendship.
“Special gratitude to Father Philip Igboamalu, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Lourdes, who joined in the rites as we laid him to rest at sunset—a fitting tribute to a life well-lived.
“Though grateful for his legacy, I mourn the loss of a dear friend who treated me as family. Our unbroken friendship spanned years, filled with impromptu visits, shared sacraments, and unwavering camaraderie.
“When he was hospitalized, I rushed to his side, offering prayers and last rites. We clung to hope—until that fateful call on June 6, 2025. While not entirely unexpected, the news still pierced my heart.”
