William Troost-Ekong has marked ten years since his first appearance for the Super Eagles, sharing deep appreciation for his time representing Nigeria.
The 31-year-old centre-back debuted internationally on 13 June 2015, completing the full match in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Chad.
Since then, Troost-Ekong has competed in three AFCON editions (2019, 2021, and 2023) and the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He shone at the 2023 AFCON, earning the MVP title while leading Nigeria to a runners-up finish and netting three times.
He also featured at the 2016 Rio Olympics, helping Nigeria’s U-23 team secure bronze under Samson Siasia.
Looking back on his career, Troost-Ekong honored the late Stephen Keshi, the coach who handed him his Super Eagles debut.
“10 YEARS REPRESENTING 🇳🇬 13.06.2015 – 06.06.2025,” he posted on X.
“I’ll forever be grateful to the ‘Big Boss’ Stephen Keshi for trusting me to start my journey in Kaduna that day.
79 appearances, 5 major tournaments, 3 medals later. Leading this team fills me with immense pride.
No ambition is out of reach. This is my calling, and I’ll keep pushing to improve daily. THANKFUL!”
Troost-Ekong recently featured in Nigeria’s 1-1 international friendly against Russia in Moscow. Semi Ajayi’s own goal put Russia ahead before Tolu Arokodare leveled for Nigeria.
